Although his voice was low and casual, there was a sense of danger flashing in his eyes. His fingers dug into the bedsheets.
Being the young master of the Cheng Family, he had been used to dealings like these. Kidnappings and assaults were no stranger to a man of his stature. In fact, he had already grown indifferent to them.
However, now that they had involved Yao Tang…this was where it got personal.
When she finally turned around and left, he slowly stood up from his bed.
The soft look on his face completely vanished as he made his way to the window. There, he could see Yao Tang’s figure retreating back into her car. Only when she had gotten in safely did he feel much more relaxed.
Just then, his phone rang.
He quickly answered, “Have you captured them already?”
Cheng Yi’s solemn voice echoed from the other end of the line, “We’ve already caught them, boss. They admitted that they were sent by the people of the Third Branch.”
“They must’ve really had a lot of time on their hands. To think that they’re screwing me over like this…”
Cheng Yan gritted his teeth, and Cheng Yi had to resist the urge to shudder. He had never heard his boss this angry before.
Just then, a thought occurred to him. “Did you intercept any information he may have?”
Cheng Yi blinked. “He was sent to assassinate us, being a part of the secret guard. He wasn’t tasked to retrieve any information.”
“I’m not talking about him,” he responded. “I’m talking about Yao Tang.”
Ah! So that was what he had been talking about.
Recovering, Cheng Yi quickly responded, “He was only thinking about saving his life. He was just about to send an emergency signal, but we intercepted the call.”
“Okay.” He nodded in satisfaction. This matter was serious, but Yao Tang didn’t need another trouble on her plate. “Since they had all the time in the world, throw their unit in the middle of the desert. Let’s see how they fare without any water.”
Without another word, he hung up the phone.
Cheng Yan gazed at his bloody shirt but chose not to change out of it. Instead, he went to his indoor gym.
He looked around and saw a dumbbell sitting on the floor. This was perfect. “Let’s see,” he murmured to himself.
Grabbing a hold of a dumbbell in each hand, he lifted them up in the air a couple of times. And within a few seconds, he could already feel the warm blood trickling down his skin.
That would do the trick!
Without another word, he hurried back into his room and picked up his phone. “Hello?” A familiar voice sounded from the other end of the line.
“Yao Tang,” he said weakly. “What do I do? My wound has reopened.”
On the other side of the city, Yao Tang was seated inside her bedroom. Her camera was turned on as she discussed the latest lesson with her classmates.
They were having their online class session where she’d answer any question they may have on their practice booklet.
However, as soon as she heard his voice, she couldn’t help but feel a bit surprised. “What did you say?” She couldn’t even hide her disbelief.
Cheng Yan had to hide the smile on his face. “I feel like my wound has been reopened. I don’t know what’s going on.”
What? She furrowed her eyebrows helplessly, but she managed to suppress her confusion. “You say it’s reopened?”
That’s impossible!
She wasn’t this terrible in applying for her medicine, and she had also given him the best medicine available. The powder should’ve done wonders on his injuries.
It shouldn’t be like this!
“I don’t know either,” he responded. “What should I do?”
There was a sense of weakness in his words, but upon listening further, she couldn’t help but feel as if there was more than what met the eye.
Her eyes twitched.
If only she had dodged to the side this wouldn’t have happened.
No one would’ve gotten hurt!
However, Cheng Yan had actually thought of protecting her and pulled her into his arms, and in turn, exposed his back.
He was hurt because of her.
She had to thank him for it.
